In recent years, there has been a rise in the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports.
What are the consequences of doping for athletes?
What measures should be taken to combat this issue?
Unprecedented name and fame in sports have given rise to use of prohibited drugs by athletes. This growing issue has unwanted consequences such as defamation of athletes once they are caught and wrong perception of the sports goes in the public. As far as measures are concerned, stringent actions against player who do it, along with-it sports rewards should be less glamorized.
First of all, the primary effect of doping is, it goes well and produces excellent results until goes unnoticed but when it captures the attention of vigilance bodies of sports, it forces the athletes to have living funeral of their public image. Many a times, it has been seen that players of several sports found engaged in doping and they were thrown out of the sport arena when the matter got attention. For example, Lance Armstrong a champion of cycling sports won multiple awards in world cycling events while using banned drugs but the matter after years, was exposed and he was genuinely found guilty and as a result, all his awards and trophies were taken back from him. Thus, he was no body after that defamation.
Second serious effect is, public spends a lot of money and time to watch sports. They support their favorite stars with love and true heart but when they hear such shameful incidents, it makes them think that they are being cheated and they are not being shown the real performance of players. Whoever is guilty of that but one things is clear that, it is the people their money as well as trust that are devalued in the whole process. For example, India is a huge market for cricket sport but when a player does wrong doings, public perception about the whole sport changes which is genuinely a bad practice to notice.
About its measures, in my mind, the first action step is, if a player is found guilty of it and his wrong doing gets proved then he must be penalized so heavily that after his case, no new athletes dare to roam in that arena. Next to it, it is the heavy commercialization of the sports that led player to think in unhealthy directions. A heavy money is involved these days in winning sports titles which is technically wrong, if such sports are little deglamorized then players will obviously not think to win at any cost even if they have to take all ethically wrong steps to win that. Thus, such corrective actions can help us to combat that issue.
In this essay, it has been discussed that how does doping affect players and how to handle its cursing issue in sports these days.
